Flower Power
“Happy Flower Day!” With those words and a carload of flowers, Patricia Gallagher brings joy to those who need it most by delivering bouquets to nursing home residents, homeless people, recovery homes, cancer support groups and ailing shut-ins. This small act of kindness was made possible when Patricia told Hannelore that Trader Joe’s had the flowers to donate but she needed to have non-profit status. Hannelore and Bob in their loving way assured Patricia that was not a problem and filled out the paper.

Her FLOWER POWER program has delivered more than 32,000 beautiful bouquets.  She had two very faithful volunteers. Bob Goodwin, age 91 and her mother Claire, age 87.  She often has so many flowers she can’t fit them into her car at once and has to make several trips, but she insists that it is worth it.  “I’ve watched lots of wrinkled hands entwined around the flowers, smelling them, touching them, admiring them and holding them close to their hearts. These are people who have lost so much…their homes, their cars, their friends, their pets. Sometimes even their families.

Her favorite stories: the man who did not want the flowers – just the box. He needed it for shelter as he was homeless. The AIDS Hospice in Philadelphia – a life changing experience. And the “random acts of flowering” walking down the streets of Philadelphia, just passing out a hundred bouquets.
